When students practice matching the individual sounds in words to the symbols that represent those sounds (e.g., phoneme/grapheme correspondences) they are promoting and strengthening a process in their brain called orthographic mapping. According to research, this is how our brains store words. In fact, orthographic mapping techniques dramatically increase the rate at which students master the sound symbol relationships in words. It usually only takes between 1-4 repetitions of mapping a word before that word is permanently stored for later retrieval.
